ABOUT THE PELVIC FLOOR

What are the pelvic floor muscles?

The pelvic floor is a term used to describe the group of muscles that forms a sling between the pubic bone and the tail bone (coccyx).

The muscles of the pelvic floor serve many important functions including supporting our pelvic organs, maintaining urinary and fecal continence, as well as allow for sexual function.

Imbalance within these tissues can lead to a number of problematic conditions including urinary and fecal incontinence, pain, and sexual dysfunction. Learn more here.

Often times, it is possible to avoid surgery. Consult with your physician regarding a non-surgical approach to your condition. As a pelvic floor rehab specialist, I am able to conservatively treat conditions like incontinence, pelvic pain, and painful intercourse.

At Women's Pelvic PT, a combination of techniques are used to resolve problems of the pelvic floor muscles such as:

  • myofascial release

  • internal and external manual techniques

  • home program education

  • dietary modifications

  • behavioral modifications

  • pelvic floor relaxation techniques

  • pelvic floor strengthening

  • breathing coordination training
